Challenging Radical Ideologies

The Onyx Link Foundation Challenges the Claim that Islam is Religion and State

21/09/2017 - For the victims of terror, their families, and loved ones in the UK and worldwide…

This document calls into question the evidence used to support the formation of a theocratic state that forces the ordering of government and society in accordance with Shariah Law.

Theocracy in this context is a political system of governing that seeks power and control based upon the belief that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a political leader who established a state after his migration to Madinah.

Advocates of this position maintain that the Prophet (PBUH) established such a state during his life. The Document of Madinah , issued by the prophet as a covenant for social inclusion and peaceful co-existence, was considered to be a ‘constitution for his state’, and his judicial arbitration (Hukm) among his companions as ‘ruling his state by what God Has revealed’, and why today the flag of ISIS depicts the seal of the Prophet (PBUH) as its banner!

Such perceptions are challenged by the OLF using the prime sources of Islam.

Terror Incident on the London Underground - Parsons Green

And the recent counter-terror arrests in Newport, South Wales (19/09/2017)

The OLF would like to take this opportunity to extend their thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families, and commend the emergency services and their prompt response in dealing with the aftermath of the atrocity. We are taking the initiative to challenge these radical ideologies head on via a knowledge based approach.

A month ago, we released our ‘open resources’, challenging radical ideologies. These resources provide an in-depth understanding of such ideologies and challenge the textual and logical arguments used to support them.

Features of Radicalisation:

1. Social isolation
a. Social isolation provides a breeding ground for radicalisation which in turn elevates it further.

b. In such a state of vulnerability, victim mentality is heightened, where feelings of resentment and anger materialise.

2. Radical Ideology
a. Radical ideology is provided within a terror narrative which is then subscribed to.

b. A terror narrative is a simplified approach to solving worldwide grievances through forms of violence

c. This results in a rejection of social and national establishments

Recommendations

Based on our previous work and provision of services we recommend the following (note: identifying the specifics of the following recommendations require a specialist and technical approach that the OLF provides):

1. Community Vigilance
a. Since radicalisation works in the milieu of isolation, countering such an environment is significant as a counter-strategy.

2. Technology & Social Media
a. Tackling online extremism and access to such graphic and hatred-filled content.

3. Providing a counter-narrative
a. Clarifying the essence and purpose of radical ideologies and challenging the ways religious texts are used to justify them.

b. As a result, empowering communities and organisations to build resilience against radicalisation, and to develop models for deradicalising and rehabilitating extremists.

The Onyx Link Foundation (OLF) Launches its Open Resource on Challenging Islamist/Jihadist Radical Ideologies.

In the absence of a satisfactory critical account on radical ideologies by Muslim scholars, the OLF, an independent think tank based in Newport South Wales, has launched its open online resource on challenging these ideologies through the utilisation of the prime sources of Islam.

Since the terrorist attacks on London in July 2005, the UK has been horrified by serious atrocities committed by British Muslims who betrayed both Britain and Islam by adopting Islamist/Jihadist radical ideologies to justify the taking of innocent lives! The perpetrators of violence and terror in the name of Islam, in their number, are insignificant compared to the 1.5 billion Muslims in the world today.

However, such perpetrators and their radical ideologies have dominated the world media for decades. They often quote verses of the Holy Quran and Prophetic statements (Hadith) to justify their atrocities and messages of hate. Moreover, for their religious practices, politics, and culture they draw from the history of Muslims and their religious traditions. Yet Muslims are peaceful and they disown terrorists and condemn their atrocities. Consequently, the key question that arises is: “What does Islam have to do with the Islamist/Jihadist radical ideologies?” This series of press releases and academic documents tackles this fundamental question.

The subject of the OLF academic document (OLF1) is to clarify the essence and purpose of the religion from its prime sources that form the context of its understanding and implementation. In short, the essence of the Message of Islam is mercy and its purpose is morality, fostering love and happiness. This context shall be the criterion that the OLF will use to investigate the evolution of the Islamist/Jihadist radical ideologies. The OLF hopes that this effort will clarify the essence and purpose of these radical ideologies and challenge the religious texts used to justify them. Such analysis may empower communities and organisations to build resilience against radicalisation, and to develop models for deradicalizing and rehabilitating extremists.
